TRAINING AT GSSC

GSSC provides coached training for swimmers from their first experience of club swimming through to State and National-level competition.

Our approach is built around long-term swimmer development. Strong technique remains the foundation, while training skills, fitness, racing capability, independence and performance understanding develop progressively as swimmers become ready for greater challenge.

HOW WE APPROACH DEVELOPMENT

Swimmers develop at different rates. Our coaches consider the whole swimmer including technique, training capacity, maturity, consistency, competition experience and readiness for the demands of the next stage. Training is designed to develop:

  • Technique
Efficient skills across all four strokes.

  • Starts, turns & underwater skills
Building the skills that connect good swimming with effective racing.

  • Training skills
Pacing, lane awareness, rest intervals and understanding how to complete a structured session.

  • Fitness & capacity
Developing endurance and speed while maintaining good technique.

  • Racing skills
Preparation, pacing, execution and learning from competition.

  • Confidence & independence
Understanding feedback, communicating with coaches and taking increasing responsibility for training and preparation.

TRAINING PROGRESSES WITH THE SWIMMER

Junior swimmers spend more time developing technique, confidence and the skills needed to train effectively.

As swimmers develop, training may become longer, more frequent and more demanding. Racing becomes more purposeful and swimmers take increasing responsibility for their preparation and performance.

Progress isn’t about simply doing more. It’s about the right training for the swimmer’s stage of development.

And importantly:

There is no single destination. Some swimmers pursue State and National competition, while others continue swimming for fitness, enjoyment, improvement and connection with the Club.

INFORMED BY LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT

GSSC’s approach is informed by Swimming Australia’s Australian Swimming Framework and long-term athlete development principles.

The Framework recognises that swimmers develop at different rates and that technical, physical, psychological and competition demands should progress appropriately as the swimmer develops.

You don’t need to understand the framework to train with GSSC, but families and swimmers who are interested can explore the national approach behind our program.

WHERE DO I FIT?

GSSC broadly supports swimmers across Junior, Development, State and National stages.

These describe stages of swimmer development and competition rather than necessarily four separate squads. Swimmers may train alongside others at different stages, with training and coaching adapted to their needs.

NEW TO CLUB TRAINING?

GSSC welcomes swimmers from 7 years of age who have developed solid learn-to-swim foundations and are ready for a coached group training environment.

There is no need to rush the transition from learn-to-swim. Strong technique, confidence and comfort in the water provide the best foundation for club training.

If you’re unsure whether your swimmer is ready, start with a Come & Try.

OUR COACHING TEAM

GSSC’s training program is delivered by a team of qualified coaches bringing a mix of experience, technical knowledge and perspectives to swimmer development.

Our coaches work together to plan training, support swimmer progression and provide continuity across the program, from swimmers beginning club training through to higher-level competition.
