RESULTS, QUALIFYING TIMES & PATHWAYS
SEE YOUR PROGRESS. UNDERSTAND WHAT’S NEXT.
Swimming has plenty of times, standards and pathways — and they don’t all mean the same thing.
You might be looking for a PB, trying to qualify for a Championship, working towards Junior Excellence recognition, or wondering how swimmers become eligible for School Sport, pathway squads or higher-performance programs.
This page brings the main information together and points you to the current official criteria

SWIM CENTRAL
Your Swim Central profile is the main record of your official swimming results.
Results from endorsed competitions are uploaded and verified through the swimming system. Swimming SA advises that an official time recorded at an endorsed meet can be used where it has been properly recorded and verified in Swim Central.
SWIMMING SA RESULTS
Swimming SA also maintains its competition results archive and Competition Dashboard for past SA meets.

WHAT COUNTS AS AN OFFICIAL TIME?
For most Championship qualifications, rankings and recognition programs, the performance needs to come from an approved or recognised competition and be recorded through the official swimming results system. If you are aiming for something specific, always check the criteria for that competition or program. Not sure whether your time counts? Ask your coach.

QUALIFYING TIMES
WHAT IS A QUALIFYING TIME?
A qualifying time, often shortened to QT, is a performance standard a swimmer must achieve before they can enter a particular event at some higher-level competitions.
Many Club and Development meets are open to eligible swimmers regardless of speed. Qualifying standards become more common at Championship and higher-performance competitions.
CURRENT QUALIFYING INFORMATION
-
Country Championships are one of the major competition opportunities for swimmers from South Australian country clubs and an important GSSC team event.
Qualifying standards apply to relevant Championship events and are published by Swimming SA for each Championship.
Criteria can change from year to year, including the qualifying period and which long-course or short-course performances can be used.
-
SA Age Championships are South Australia’s major age-group Championship competition.
Swimmers need to achieve the qualifying standard for the individual events they wish to enter and meet the relevant age and eligibility requirements.
The qualification period and standards are published by Swimming SA for each Championship.

-
SA Open Championships provide Championship-level competition without the same age-group structure as Age Championships.
Qualifying standards apply and are published for each competition.
Some younger swimmers may qualify for Open competition, but coaches can help determine whether the event is appropriate within the swimmer’s development and competition program.
-
Short-course competition takes place in a 25m pool and has its own Championship program and qualifying standards.
A swimmer’s short-course and long-course times are separate official performances. Always check which type of time the particular competition accepts.

-
The Northern Territory Country Swimming Championships provide another major country swimming opportunity and may be included in GSSC competition planning from time to time.
Swimming NT publishes its own eligibility, qualifying standards, qualifying period and event conditions.
These requirements are separate from SA Country Championships.

-
Australian Age Championships are a major national milestone for age-group swimmers.
Swimming Australia publishes qualifying standards for each Championship, generally by age, gender and event.
Achieving an Australian Age qualifying time allows the swimmer to enter the relevant event, subject to the full competition eligibility and entry requirements.

DEVELOPMENT & REPRESENTATIVE PATHWAYS
Swimmers may also be recognised or selected through development, school sport, State and national performance pathways.
These programs have different purposes. Some recognise achievement, some provide additional development opportunities and others are selective high-performance programs.
Being selected for one pathway is not a requirement for being successful in swimming, and there is no single route every swimmer is expected to follow.
-
Swimming Australia’s Junior Excellence program (JX) recognises performances by junior competitive swimmers.
Swimmers can achieve different levels of recognition based on the times they record at eligible competitions.
JX is different from a Championship qualifying time. It is a recognition and development program, giving younger swimmers benchmarks to work towards while they build their skills and competition experience.
There is generally no need to separately “enter” JX — eligible official results are used to determine recognition.
For GSSC’s younger swimmers, JX can provide a useful goal without making State or National Championship qualification the only measure of progress.
-
School swimming provides a separate representative pathway alongside Club swimming.
Primary-aged swimmers may have opportunities to progress through:
School → District → School Sport SA State Championships → South Australian School Sport Team → School Sport Australia Championships
For GSSC swimmers, this can be one of their first opportunities to represent something beyond their Club.
Selection processes, events and qualifying requirements are managed by School Sport SA, rather than GSSC or Swimming SA.
-
Secondary students can also compete through School Sport SA competition and may have opportunities to progress towards South Australian representative selection.
School Sport and Club swimming complement each other, but they are separate competition systems with their own eligibility and selection requirements.
If a swimmer is aiming for School Sport selection, coaches can help them understand how it fits alongside their Club competition program.
-
School Sport SA selects South Australian swimming teams to compete at national School Sport Australia Championships.
Selection is based on the criteria published for the relevant year and may consider qualifying performances, rankings, available events and team composition.
Meeting a nominated performance standard does not necessarily guarantee selection.
-
Swimming SA provides development and performance pathway opportunities for swimmers demonstrating the potential to progress further within competitive swimming.
Programs may include Flippers and Development Squad opportunities, with selection based on published age, performance and pathway criteria.
These programs can provide swimmers and their coaches with additional education, development opportunities and exposure to the State performance pathway.
Achieving a nominated standard may make a swimmer eligible for consideration but does not necessarily guarantee selection.
-
The South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) forms part of South Australia’s high-performance sport system.
Its swimming program supports selected athletes who are progressing towards elite national and international performance.
Selection is based on current SASI and Swimming Australia high-performance criteria and involves much more than achieving a single qualifying time.
For the small number of swimmers who reach this stage, SASI can provide access to specialist performance support while working alongside their swimming program and coach.
-
Swimming provides competition and development pathways for swimmers with eligible classifications.
Multi-Class opportunities can include:
Club and State competition
Multi-Class events at Championships
Junior Excellence recognition
Swimming SA pathway programs
Australian Age and Open Championships
national Para development and performance pathways
State and national team opportunities.
Eligibility, classification and performance standards depend on the relevant pathway.
GSSC coaches can help families identify appropriate opportunities and connect with the relevant swimming organisations where required.
-
For swimmers interested in distance swimming beyond the pool, Open Water provides another competition and development pathway.
Swimming SA and Swimming Australia conduct Open Water Championships and pathway opportunities, with distances and eligibility increasing as swimmers develop.
Open Water can complement pool swimming but has its own competition, safety and qualification requirements.
OUR SWIMMERS. THEIR JOURNEYS.
GSSC has had swimmers achieve Championship standards, earn recognition, hold records and represent at District, State and National levels across different swimming pathways.
We want to recognise those achievements while also helping younger swimmers understand that every journey looks different.
